The Accounting Program

We offer a premier four-year program in Pennsylvania to prepare our students for a career in accounting, and specifically designed to help them pass the certified public accountant (CPA) exam. Accounting graduates have a variety of initial career options including public accounting (tax or audit), corporate accounting, financial analysis, government and nonprofit accounting, banking, treasury operations or entry into graduate or law school.  As an Accounting major at Elizabethtown College, you will gain proficiency in accounting and develop a strong business core foundation to enable you to pursue whichever path is right for you.

150-Hour CPA Requirement

Our Accounting program meets Pennsylvania's education requirements for the CPA exam. In order to become a licensed certified public accountant, most states require 150-credit hours, in addition to a bachelor's degree and passing the CPA exam.  At E-town College, your advisor in the Accounting program will individually coach you in pursuing your CPA license and help you complete all 150 credits during your four years, if you choose that career path. You can achieve this goal by earning course credits for acceptable performance on Advanced Placement (AP) exams, performing internships for course credit, completing summer courses and taking additional semester courses. We have prepared sample 4-year schedules to use as general guides for meeting the 150-hour CPA requirement. Another alternative for earning the extra credits is to pursue a Master's degree at another institution. Currently, firms are not giving preference to individuals with an advanced degree, so completing 150 credits in 4 years avoids a costly 5th year of education and gets you into a paying career a year earlier!

If you are interested in international accounting, we’d advise you to take one of these three paths, in addition to gaining experience through faculty-led cross cultural experiences:

  • Major in Accounting with a Modern Languages minor
  • Major in Accounting with an International Studies minor
  • Major in International Business with a concentration in Accounting

Accounting Job and Internship Fair

Every year we organize a Job and Internship Fair specifically for our Accounting Majors. We invite national and regional accounting firms, as well as both government and industry professionals, to come to campus and provide information on job and internship opportunities in their organizations. Many of these firms and companies interview candidates right on our campus. In the past, our students have benefitted from the Accounting Job Fair by networking with professionals, as well as connecting with employers offering internships and full time positions. The majority of our students have accepted full time positions in the field before they graduate.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program

The VITA Program offers free basic tax return preparation to low-to-moderate-income (generally, $54,000 and below) individuals who cannot prepare their own tax returns. The tax returns are prepared by accounting students and are reviewed by the Director of the Accounting Program for accuracy. This program allows you to earn college credits while honing your practical accounting skills in the area of tax preparation and also providing a service to the community.

Accounting Career Days

Elizabethtown College and our local PICPA (Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs) chapter co-host one of the “Accounting Career Days” programs that are presented across the state. The one-day event features local CPAs and provides information to high school students about career paths in accounting. Speakers talk to students about their unique career and school experiences, as well as their challenges in finding work-life balance. The event also provides an opportunity for high school students to ask questions of our current accounting majors and to learn more information about the college admissions process. The event typically attracts around 200 high school students and educators every year.

Want to learn more about life on campus? Schedule a visit! You’ll have the opportunity to tour our 200+ acre campus, meet the admissions team, and talk with current students and faculty about opportunities in the Department!

The Director of the Accounting Program and Edgar T. Bitting Chair of Accounting is Prof. Terrie Riportella.
