Ashley Huttenstine '12

Ashley Huttenstine came to E-town with an idea of what she wanted to do, but didn’t know just how much she would end up challenging herself.

ashely huttenstine in front of her poster at chemistry conference“I had a really great chemistry teacher in high school who inspired me to become a teacher in order to reach out and share my talents with others,” she said.

The question, then, was what to focus on. She always loved science in high school, but when she came to E-town she took the opportunity to push herself and expand her horizons.

“Chemistry was never a science that came easily to me, so I wanted to challenge myself,” Ashley said, adding that she took part in independent research to push herself even more. “Chemistry and Secondary Education majors are not required to do independent research; however, I wanted to challenge myself. I started doing research with Dr. Jeffrey Rood sophomore year in order to test my skills, think more critically and learn more lab techniques that I can pass along to future students.”

Ashley is also ambitious outside the classroom. She's active in Emotion, E-town’s dance group; serves as a Peer Mentor and an Admissions tour guide; and belongs to several other clubs and organizations.

“I believe that I have really come out of my shell since I have been at E-town. I have become more outgoing; I reached out to the campus community and got involved,” she said.

Not slowing down, Ashley has set her sights on continuing her education while a member of the working world.

“After college I plan to stay in the Lancaster area to teach high school chemistry, while working on my master’s degree.”
