"I find that the professors here really care about you as a person and want you to succeed as a person, musician, and teacher." --Alena Lerch

alena lerchWhen asked to describe what makes her education at Elizabethtown College unique, Alena Lerch spoke of the relationships that she has had with professors and her access to real world experiences.

Alena reflected, "A lot of the professors in the music department are open to helping you succeed in your coursework but I think it goes even deeper than that in our department. I have gone to professors to talk about life in general and I find that the professors here really care about you as a person and want you to succeed as a person, musician, and teacher."

As a senior enrichment opportunity, Alena has had the opportunity to work as the director of a children's community choir. She stated, "this experience is so personalized and connected to real life because I get to plan the curriculum and I work with a professor to coordinate the instruction . . . I get to teach the children based on my own ideas and my own discipline plan."

Her engagement with real–life experiences began much earlier in her college career. She mentioned, "I like the fact that we start teaching really, really early. Though teaching in front of our peers is a very nerve-racking experience, I think it's one of the best experiences that I got in college because you get your feet in the water and you learn that you really do have a passion for teaching music." Her experiences in the classroom make her feel prepared for her upcoming experiences as a student teacher.
