First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare

This fall, Elizabethtown College and High Library are proud to present the exhibition First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare. This nationally touring exhibit comes to Elizabethtown courtesy of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., in honor of 400 years since William Shakespeare’s death.

The exhibit will feature an original copy of Shakespeare’s First Folio, published in 1623. Considered one of the most influential books in the world, the First Folio includes 36 of Shakespeare’s plays, 18 of which had never before been printed. Without the First Folio’s publication, those plays, including Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, As You Like It, and others, might have been lost forever.

The First Folio! exhibition will run from November 10 to December 4 in the High Library. In conjunction with the exhibit, Elizabethtown College will also offer educational programs and related events for the public and families, including family workshops, theatrical performances, and a music recital. In addition to the First Folio! exhibit, the library will be hosting Will’s Words: A Shakespeare Art & Design Exhibit with works by Elizabethtown College students. Click here for a complete listing of events.

Listen to this wonderful radio story from WITF on the First Folio exhibit, featuring conversations with E-town librarian Joshua Cohen and theater professor Dr. Michael Swanson!
