The Preparatory Division
The Preparatory Division at Elizabethtown College offers music instruction to students of all ages and is available for community members as well as all members of the Elizabethtown College community.
Private Lessons:
Private instruction is available on most instruments. You may choose your preferred instructor level from the list below:
- Student Teacher: A qualified Elizabethtown College music major or minor, approved by the applied lesson faculty member.
- Instructor: A recent Elizabethtown College graduate who has taught in the Preparatory Division as a Student Teacher.
- Adjunct Faculty: A part-time Elizabethtown College faculty member.
- College Faculty: A full-time Elizabethtown College faculty member.
The student will receive 13 half-hour lessons that are taught in conjunction with the College semester. There is a voluntary recital at the end of each term to showcase the hard work of the student during that semester.
Early Childhood Music Class:
Weekly classes for children ages 2-5 yrs. old and is parent interactive. The class is limited to 10 students and is taught by a qualified Music Education major that is selected and supervised by Dr. Kevin Shorner-Johnson, Director of Music Education.
Jazz Improvisation:
Weekly classes and private lessons are available and taught by Kirk Reese. Both the class and lessons are available on any instrument and will develop and improve the student’s improvisational skills.
Music Therapy Services:
Music Therapy is the use of music and music activities in the maintenance, restoration or improvement of mental and physical health. In the context of music and music making, the music therapist works toward non-musical outcomes based on the needs of the participant. Individual or small group sessions are available with a registered board-certified music therapist or a music therapy student. An initial assessment will be required before entrance into the program. All persons with special needs and interest in music are welcome.
