Class of 1954 Celebrates 70th Anniversary

(L-R): Delores Heisey '54, Janet Murphy '54, Lois Helstrom '54, Janet Mills '54, and Liz Roth '54 celebrated their 70th anniversary of graduating from Etown with a tea party hosted by Janet Mills' daughters, including fellow Etown alumna Janice Mills '84 (pictured far right). During the celebration, guests from the Class of 1954 received the Etown pin, which is now presented to incoming Blue Jay students.

Rosalind Griffin '61 was selected as a recipient of a National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Maryland Social Work Lifetime Achievement Award. The honor recognized Griffin's exceptional contributions and dedication to the field of social work.

Barbara Larmon Failing '75

Elementary Education and English alumna Barbara Larmon Failing '75 recently published her new book, “MASSACHUSETTS! The Stolen Spyglass," an exciting adventure mystery set on Nantucket Island off the coast of Cape Cod. The read-aloud book for ages 8 to 12 years old is Failing's second of the Adventure USA series.

Social Work alumna Cynthia (Arnold) Lapidus '92 was recognized as a 2024 Angels in Adoption honoree by the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute for her advocacy toward adoption issues.

Diana Heeren '96

Diana Heeren '96 was promoted to Senior Associate Vice President for Finance and Chief Compliance Officer at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Heeren manages the University’s $170 million operating budget and long-range financial planning and oversees several key functions, including the Business Office, Budget and Financial Planning, Treasury Management, and Conferences and Special Programs.

Marnie (Kinney) Grumbach '00

Marnie (Kinney) Grumbach '00 (pictured on the left), a Communications alumna and Founder of integrated marketing communications agency Fluent imc, recently accepted seven Golden Arrow Awards from the Maine Public Relations Council for the agency's outstanding work across various communications campaigns. The Golden Arrows recognize excellence in communications, public relations, and marketing throughout Maine.

Susan Bender '03

Dr. Susan Bender '03 was promoted to Associate Professor of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. Bender majored in Biology at Etown, then earned her VMD and Ph.D. in virology from the University of Pennsylvania and MS in veterinary forensic sciences from the University of Florida. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.

Jennifer Galloway '06 was announced as the immediate past chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Young Lawyers Division (YLD) during the association’s Annual Meeting on May 10, 2024. As YLD immediate past chair, Galloway will serve on the 2024-25 PBA Board of Governors.

Ryan Kiscaden '07, M'14

Ryan Kiscaden '07, M'14 launched his fictional children's book, "The Air Came to a Stop" in November 2024. The book is the second installment in the Next UP Trades Series, following "The Water Came to a Stop,"
and is designed to help combat workforce challenges by sparking curiosity in trade careers early on.

Paul D. Edger '08 was elected to a three-year term on the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Board of Governors, effective  after  the association’s Annual Meeting on May 10, 2024. Edger will serve as the PBA Zone 3 governor, representing lawyers in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties.

Lillian Schemadovits-Norris ’08

Lillian Schemadovits-Norris ’08 was promoted to Permitting and Compliance Manager of the Environmental Health and Safety team at Roseburg Forest Products. Schemadovits-Norris studied Environmental Science at Etown. She joined Rosenburg in 2018 as an Environmental Technician and has become an expert in Oregon's unique and challenging air permitting framework.

Julie Sebastian '12

Julie Sebastian '12 was recognized for the growth and expansion of her company, Julie Sebastian Softball and Fitness LLC in Newtown Square, Pa. at the SCORE Small Business Achievement Awards event in June 2024. Sebastion, who received a SCORE Small Business Achievement Award in 2019, formed her company in 2018 to teach softball to young girls and has since evolved to include fitness classes and working with teams.

Elementary Education and English alumna Barbara Larmon Failing '75  recently published the middle-grade novel, "ALASKA! Danger on the Mushing Trail (Ages 8-12)."  The story follows Josh Parker, an eleven-year-old with a fear of dogs who is visiting his older cousin Brent, a competitive sled dog racer, in Alaska and faces a blizzard that disrupts a training run.

David R. Longsderff '80 self-published his first book, “Jobs,” in September 2023. A Business Administration major with a Marketing concentration while at Etown, Longsderff completed a 40-year international business career in 2019 to start an insurance brokerage firm in Lancaster. Jobs explores Longsderff’s career path and the lessons he has learned through his various occupations.

Melissa Drummond (Arnold) '88

Melissa Drummond (Arnold) '88 retired in March 2023 after 35 years of public service as a federal worker. Most recently, Drummond served as  Chief Human Capital Officer at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Production and Conservation since 2016 where Drummond's team provided customer service to more than 22,000 employees.

Matt Lauver '08 was promoted to Fire Protection Engineering Supervisor for Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command at the Navy Yard in South Philadelphia. Lauver is the primary point of contact and subject matter expert for all fire protection, life safety, and building code matters for all shore-based facilities at all the Navy bases in the northeast.

Jason J. Theobald, Esq. '07 was elected as a member of the Portland, Maine-based law firm of Curtis Thaxter LLC. Theobald's practice focuses on business and commercial litigation, property disputes, land use and zoning matters, discrimination claims, and administrative proceedings. He joined the firm in 2019 after practicing law in the Litigation Division of the Office of the Maine Attorney General and serving as a law clerk for the Maine Superior Court and the Maine Business and Consumer Docket. Theobald received his law degree from Villanova University School of Law in 2015.

Caitlin Wilson '16 completed service in the Peace Corps after 27 months of living and working as an agriculture volunteer in Ghana. During her service, Wilson was assigned to the northern region of Ghana, where she served as an agriculture extension agent for the community. She and a local counterpart worked with a women’s group to grow sweet potatoes and establish a dry season garden to preserve the vines between rainy seasons.
