Sports is a microcosm of society and the world. Etown's Graduate Certificate in Sports Management will help students develop an awareness of business and leadership careers in sports and athletics. Focus will be on setting personal goals to discern career paths, start and improve careers and network with professionals in a variety of areas (local, state, regional, national, international) and in various professional settings (public and private).
Careers in the competitive, multi-billion dollar sports industry rely on ethical leaders who have developed specific workplace and personal values along with various leadership, communication and organizational skills. This program is designed for students to gain the knowledge and experience needed to work successfully in multiple roles across the sports industry.
This 12-credit certificate includes four online courses which can be completed in as little as one year. The certificate can also be stacked into Etown's 36-credit Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of Strategic Leadership (MSL) .
Students who complete the Sports Management certificate are eligible to apply for the Registered Athletic Administrator credential through the NIAAA. In addition, students with two years of Athletic Director experience can become eligible for the Certified Athletic Administrator certification exam.

Sports Management Course Descriptions
This course considers leadership dilemmas that can arise when individual values conflict with those of the organization or when a situation requires decisions with conflicting value sets. Students use case studies, their own experiences, and current events to examine actions leaders have taken and consequences faced when confronted with ethical dilemmas. Students work on a real-life ethical dilemma for understanding in-depth reasoning of the problem and to develop an action plan for solving and preventing similar problems at the organizational and societal levels. From these discussions, students have an opportunity to develop a personal model for ethical leadership. Through an examination of team culture, this course allows for an exploration of the development of ethical leadership skills and critical workplace values within competitive business, sports, and athletics settings.
This course explores the basic knowledge and understanding in media relations and marketing in sports. Emphasizes building and managing effective media relations, statistics, publications, and promotions. Critical to success is development of leadership skills and customer service skills. Students will embrace an ability to adapt to emerging technologies, innovation, and competing priorities.
This course provides an overview of management of resources and administration pertaining to all levels of athletics. Focuses on basic theories of management and administration in athletic organizations. Addresses planning, scheduling, and financing aspects required to run a successful athletics program. Students develop communication and management skills with an emphasis placed on decision making.
This course will explore how to bring out the best in yourself and others to drive team performance. Students will develop an understanding of strategic management and apply elements, such as decision-making, implementation, listening, learning, change management and strategy execution, to impact outcomes. Introduces a set of personal, interpersonal, and team-based skills and competencies required in leadership roles. These skills include self-awareness, managing stress, creative problem solving, communicating effectively, gaining power and influencing others, correct performance and motivation problems, managing conflict, and delegation.
