Check-In/Move-In FAQs
Q: I didn’t get my preferred building. Why not?
A: We did our very best to get each student assigned to one of their top two buildings. For some buildings, there were more requests than open spaces.
Q: I’m a returner. Why is my roommate information different from housing selection?
A: Over the summer some students decide not to return for a variety of reasons. When this happens, we need to utilize as many open beds as possible and that means going through our waitlist and then assigning transfer students.
Q: Can I change buildings, rooms, or roommates?
A: At this time, we are not able to make adjustments to your housing assignments. From the above disclaimer: Students who wish to make changes will be able to request so beginning on Sept. 13.
Q: Can I arrive earlier than my assigned Check-In Date?
A: The Fall Early Arrival Request form closed on Sunday, August 4. All students were emailed if their request was approved or not. If you arrive early on a date you were not approved for you will be charged $50 per day before your arrival date.
If your early arrival date is a move-in day for new students you will come through check-in at Leffler during the check-in times. If you are arriving outside of those dates, you will go to Campus Safety (located on Mt. Joy Street) to check-in and receive your key.
Q: What does it mean if I have more than one roommate listed?
A: If you have more than one roommate listed you are either in a triple or an independent living unit (ILU) such as an apartment or quad. Also, our triples are true triples and not overflow housing. That is, they are designed for three people to occupy it.
Q: Why didn’t I get the roommate I requested?
A: If this happened your roommate group was not completed whether someone chose not to join or the leader did not accept someone’s request to join a roommate group.
Q: Have students been offered housing contract release due to capacity?
A: No. We are not offering students a contract release at this time.
Q: How do I change to a commuter?
A: To be a commuter you must live at your permanent residence within a 30 minute/ 30-mile radius with your family members. Complete the housing status change form on StarRez. We will confirm whether you qualify to commute. Commuting does not violate your housing contract and you do not have to pay to a breakage fee to commute.
Q: My roommate is not responsive. What should I do?
A: Many of you are on vacations, working, interning, or just savoring every last minute of summertime as possible. Some folks are really shy. Some of you may have an international student for a roommate and they are working on their final visa paperwork, travel arrangements, etc. Keep trying and be patient. We know that can make planning tricky. If you don’t hear from them by the time you are loading up your car to come to campus, bring what you need for you.
Q: My roommate says they’re not coming to Etown. What does that mean for me?
A: Often you will hear this information before we do. If your roommate shares this with you, please ask that they contact Residence Life so we can be supportive of you. Without hearing directly from your roommate, we are not able to assign a new roommate. If they do tell us, we will work to get you a roommate, because there will be students accepting our admissions offer late.
Q: Can I have a car on campus?
A: All student vehicles parking on campus must be registered. Campus Safety oversees parking and will be happy to answer your questions (717-361-1264). You can register your vehicle on JayWeb. Parking permits will be in your campus mailboxes.
